In a rollercoaster first half, Ansty and Maresfield delivered a chaotic goal-fest that saw the visitors lead 5–3 at the break. Maresfield opened the scoring through a comical moment as Ryall was dubbed “Bambi on Ice,” with the opposition capitalising on the defensive chaos, despite desperate calls from the Ginger Adonis for the goalie to get the ball. Ansty struck back when Crossy found Fin, who audaciously lobbed the keeper from 30 yards to level. But Maresfield surged ahead with a trio of goals – a breakaway finish after Ryall and Monk’s confusion, a parried corner by Jones was turned in and a clinical counter from an Ansty corner. Morgs kept Ansty in it with a smart finish from Lucas’ pass, and later added another before halftime, thanks to Lucas’ clever pullback.
Note: David Lucas, not Lucas Gmitter (No1 Lucas).
The second half was a different story. Ansty came out transformed, with Munday marshalling the defence to a clean sheet and setting the platform for a stunning comeback. Will’s set-piece delivery became Maresfield’s undoing – three successive corners proved decisive. Monk powered in the first with a commanding header, before Louie twice found himself on the scoresheet courtesy of deflections off his now infamous bald spot, each one turning the game on its head and leaving Maresfield reeling.
The final whistle confirmed a remarkable 6–5 win for Ansty in a match that had everything: comedy, calamity, and a heroic turnaround. While Maresfield will rue Ryall & Jonesy only played 45 minutes and squandered dominance, Ansty’s resilience and set-piece prowess stole the show in an unforgettable contest.
